"Wilderness Gathering"

An Original Oil Painting on canvas by Riley Geddings,
Florida Landscape Artist
Artist's Narration of this Painting
"Wilderness Gathering" ... is an out of the way and serene painting in the back wilderness of south Florida ! I do enjoy painting Florida's wildlife, trees, and especially sunsets and sunrises.
This "Wilderness Gathering" painting was fun for me to paint. As I was painting this oil, it pleased me to portray a scene where no humans were there to spoil the pristine beauty of this area of The Florida Everglades ! The sun is rising over this lovely secluded pond again as it has done for at least four billion years - shining its brilliance into the clouds and across this calm pond ! I decided to use a lots of knife work in those silent clouds for you.
Breaking the colorful sky on the left, one can see a large flock of duck or geese like birds flying north having just flown over the foliage on the distant horizon, still hazy with the morning atmosphere. Underneath them but a little closer toward us is a thicket of mixed Florida foliage and contain two stately Cabbage, or Sabal palm trees.
Beginning at the edge of both horizon trees we can see a typical flat sea of grass called "the saw grass plain" and there are hundreds of square mile of these plains in the Everglades. In the middle we can see a distant cluster of dead Pine trees, called "snags" along with a faint reflection of them in the calm water. This plain is displayed as older, dry grass because of the time of the season. In the spring, new greener grass will grow. This pond is in the "lowlands" and is duplicated many times over. At the edge of the pond a curtain of water reeds can be seen growing in the rich, black earth giving some shelter to small fish.
As we move around on the left, notice that the shallow water, with its reflections, have two visiting birds very common to this area, the Great White Egret or Heron. They know where to find those hiding little fish and are ready for breakfast !
Now let's move to the right foreground where another piece of land is holding on and supports more reeds and a lonesome Cabbage palm which appears to make a good trellis for a flowering vine ! A graceful Heron is just above us gliding on silent wings.
Higher still, we find my favorite bird hovering above everthing - the inquisitive Black-headed Gull (Larus Ridibundus) searching for an early morsel himself !
