Southwest Florida

An Original Oil Painting by Riley Geddings,
Florida Landscape Artist

Description by Maggie Geddings,
Writer, Author and Poet

This Original Oil Painting
"SOUTHWEST FLORIDA" - the title of the most recent oil painting by my husband.... We continue to enjoy our home state of Florida as Riley once more re-creates the scene we observed last month as we enjoyed a weekend trip along the southwest coast of the "Sunshine State". What you are looking at today is typical of that area of Florida - near Marco Island - looking west - and ultimately to the Gulf of Mexico. In the foreground we find ourselves standing on a finger of sandy coastline - observing one of Florida's native birds - the Great White Heron - as he - or she - takes a leisurely stroll through this shallow shoal - near the small, partly-submerged, Mangrove Trees. Our beautiful, elegant Heron is ever alert for that ripple in these warm waters which would denote the presence of a fish - a perfect snack for his - or her - mid-afternoon break - or "tea time" as I used to say back in England many moons ago ... but I digress ...

On the right of this painting - beckoning our eyes - perceptible to our senses - we find something that Riley portrays best - palm trees - and here we see majestic Coconut Palms, raising their heads to the skies. This particular palm tree survives in sandy soil and is therefore prolific in Florida - and is one of over the 200 different species of palm trees found in Florida. Beyond these nearby Coconut Palms, depth perception of this painting is created by the continuation of two more fingers of land, with their beautiful white sandy beachs, and those additional, distant palm trees. In the far distance can be seen a couple of the many Mangrove islands (or keys) prolific in Florida. This creates for the viewer an almost 3-dimensional scene.

Now let us look heavenwards - to the skies .... what do we see ? Hhmmmm ... it seems to me that this mid-afternoon sky is indicative of perchance that typical, almost daily, afternoon shower we often enjoy here in Florida. Against the cerulean blue sky (cerulean is the official description of this color oil paint used by artists worldwide) ... we see a build-up of cumulous clouds in the center and on the left can be seen the somewhat threatening arrival of cumulo nimbus - our approaching shower. Of course, no painting by this popular artist would be complete without Riley's favorite hallmark .... the inquisitive seagull .... and on his most recent painting - "Southwest Florida" - we discover not one - but two such gulls - hovering overhead - peering downwards - also ever alert to enjoy a tasty fish - an enjoyable afternoon snack.
