Description of this Painting
"Sunset Gathering" ... This popular Florida artist - my husband - has a penchant for Florida's wildlife, trees, and especially sunsets. This latest masterpiece - "Sunset Gathering" - is a consolidation of all three of those specific scenarios - a united combination - the epitome (Greek - pronounced epidomy) of a Florida wildlife panorama during the twilight hours - a glorious sunset. "Sunset Gathering" is a beautiful sight to behold - especially for those of us who enjoy relaxing during those twilight hours in order to perceive - gaze upon - admire - and enjoy the colorful sky as we rivet our eyes upon the rainbow of colors created by the setting sun. Riley has captured this particular sunset beautifully - the varied layers from the uppermost cerulean blue - to the lavender - to the reddish orange - the yellow - to the actual, somewhat lemony brilliance of the sun disappearing beyond the horizon. Included thereon is a scattering of white puffy cumulous clouds uppermost - whilst below on center-stage the layered clouds have been brilliantly executed by the use of a knife - a big plus in my opinion. Just a few moments have transpired since that life-giving sun sank below the far horizon.
In the foreground of the distant grassy plain, we find ourselves in a bird-lovers paradise ... several of which are found in Florida's Everglades and several scenes of which Riley has created in other such masterpieces. The star of this scenario is one of the most striking birds found in the continent of North America - and especially in Florida ... the magnificent Osprey - a raptor (bird of prey - Maggie's favorite such bird) - which is about 2-feet tall with a huge wingspan of almost 6-feet. She is just now returning to her nest with a freshly-caught morsel of fish to feed to her young nestling - soon to become a fledgeling when it flies and leaves the nest for the first time. As is typical for this bird of prey, the nest was built on the top of a "snag" (a dead tree - possibly struck by lightning - yet still anchored in the ground - in this case, a dead cypress tree). At stage-front and center-stage we admire several Great White Herons, also native of our fair State, as they search those shallow waters of a lowlands pond for one last morsel for their evening repast before retiring for the night.
Rising majestically from the pond, we see a regal-looking Cypress Tree, complete with its Spanish Moss, and emerging from the water is a "Cypress Knee" - the name given to the roots of the Cypress which roots traditionally grow up out of the water. The other trees are all Cabbage Palms (also known as "Sabal" Palms - Florida's official state tree) and a close observance of those two in the foreground on the left reveal that they have recently "blossomed" and are displaying their fruit which has already turned yellow and is ready to drop. Incidentally, "Sunset Gathering" was the first of the new year 2011 that Riley completed.
Great job Riley ...
