Description of this Painting
"Rest Stop" ... an oil painting completed in March, 2011. This impression art work gives the artist "carte blanc" to express his mood and feelings as he paints ! Some real, perhaps, and some quite unreal !
This scene depicts three sailboats at anchor on the lee side of an island in the southern Gulf of Mexico. Based on the appearance of the sky, we find that these three sailors have decided to take refuge in the safety of a small island's windbreak (the leeward side) for fear of getting caught in a stormy sea of wind and waves !
The island is lush with foliage and palm trees, the surrounding water is colorful, displaying reflections of the sky with its clouds denoting a possible storm approaching. The time is mid to late afternoon, not bright, but veiled by clouds of uncertainty.
Where are the birds normally here in mass - soaring, hovering, roosting ? Today, we can see only two seagulls as they approach the craft with curiosity. Another sign to our three sailors that a possible storm is on the horizon.
The sun, with its mighty brilliant light, is trying to spread its glory across this remote area, but is slowly becoming enveloped by the pending atmospheric conditions. The water, on the other hand, is gloriously reflecting the limited blues of the sky, the fading white to yellow, orange, and darker red of the colorful clouds.
The boats are resting and securely anchored, wafting gently by the slow roll of the Gulf waves. Some are catching an occasional glitter of bright color from the fading sunlight, and some are obscured by the dark shadows of the clouds.
