" Peaceful Sunset "

Peaceful Sunset

An Original Oil Painting by Riley Geddings,
Florida Landscape Artist

Description by Maggie Geddings,
Author and Poet

This Original Oil Painting
"Peaceful Sunset" .... what does one think of when one hears those words ??
From this author's viewpoint, certain words come to mind - words such as ... quiet, serene, tranquil, silence, hushed ...... all words to describe the end of a perfect day - the twilight hours - the going down of the sun. From this artist's viewpoint, he has once more captured on canvas a scene of beauty - a peaceful scene expressing that special quiet moment in time when one pauses on this journey we call "Life" and one stops to smell the roses !!

Leaving the literary world behind me, I now turn my thoughts to this latest masterpiece created in 2009 by this Florida Landscape Artist named Riley Geddings. Needs must that I first mention the sky - one of Riley's strongpoints. Here we see what Floridians enjoy on an almost daily basis - watching the sun go down over the bays and estuaries and Gulf waters of the southwest coast of Florida. The brightness of these lemony hues gives way to the deeper toned orangey-red colors of this particular sunset as the earth turns its face away from the sun. One of my favorite aspects of this artist's creations is "knifework" whereby the thick oil paint is applied using an artist's knife-blade - a spatular-type of steel painting tool. This produces a thick-layered effect which adds a third dimension to the overall appearance of the painting. This method was used in the clouds ... nice job Riley !!

On the distant horizon is a line of typical Florida foliage separated by the estuary heading west. The two atolls in the center add depth and dimension to this artwork. We now arrive on dry land - the secluded beach - untouched by man - pristine - somewhat sandy - whereon one sees an area of rough, scrubby ground-cover. On center-stage is a small sandy beach upon which a small wave is about to gently ripple ashore. I saved the best 'til last - my favorite aspect of most of Riley's masterpieces ... the Florida palm trees ... the outlines of which Riley has mastered to the ultimate degree. The two stately palms in this painting serve as a framework for this peaceful sunset scene. Lest I forget ... here comes Riley's hallmark - the hovering seagull gliding in on silent wings, landing-gear down, seeking his resting place for the night.

The colors you see on your computer screen will vary and do not do justice to those in the actual painting which are beautiful ! This original oil was painted on board, has extreme knife work, was completed in February 2009, and signed by this artist, R. Geddings.
