"Gulf Beach Pathway"

An Original Oil Painting by Riley Geddings,
Florida Landscape Artist

Description by Maggie Geddings,
Writer, Published Author and Poet

Description of this Painting
"Gulf Beach Pathway" ... this oil on canvas was the last painting completed in the year 2010 by our favorite Florida Landscape Artist ... yes ... Riley Geddings. Another "different" aspect is the size of the canvas ... this one is 12-inches high by 24-inches wide ... not the norm for Riley, as our regular clients are aware. The "constant" in this analogy, however, is the quality of the actual painting ... once again, it is outstanding ...

Standing on the beach of the Gulf of Mexico in the southwest area of Florida and looking west, we see a clear, rather bright cerulean blue sky with a few cumulous clouds dotted here and there ... the knifework on these clouds is a plus and provides somewhat of a three-dimensional effect. Who amongst us can fail to admire and appreciate a body of clear, aqua waters such as we find here ... our Gulf of Mexico provides several of such aqua shades (thalo blue being the official name of this particular color) in these warm tropical waters caressing our beautiful white sandy beaches. The somewhat sparse white-caps are the result of a "Zephyr" (a soft gentle breeze ... dontcha love trivia ...) ... and wending its way out to sea we see a sailboat - sloop - riding those gentle waves.

Now finding ourselves standing on the beach, we notice the pathway leading inland between the two sand dunes on which are a few wind-swept Coconut Palms, found in abundance in our lovely State. Riley did a great job in portraying the somewhat rugged condition of these sand dunes on which some typical Florida beach foliage has taken root - whereas on the actual beach per se, we observe some seaweed (the official name for seaweed is "macroalga" and "Sargassum" is a member of the "phaeophyceae" class of seaweed - it never attaches itself to any sea floor). As for the wildlife in this painting, in the foreground we see a Brown Pelican gliding along the thermal breeze just above the Gulf - eyes ever alert for his next meal - some unsuspecting fish. Hovering overhead is Riley's "hallmark" - the inquisitive Black-headed Gull (Larus Ridibundus) our favorite gull - also on the lookout for a tasty repast.

Another great oil painting from my favorite artist ... Nice one, Riley !!

Artist's Narration
This is the fourth Florida Beach scene containing sand dunes and beach foliage that I have painted in the last 6 years. I have tried to capture some authentic Gulf of Mexico water colors which tend to be darker near the distant horizon, and a thalo greenish blue near the beach as the water gets more shallow.

The sailboat does two things. First, it breaks the long water horizon and gives depth to the painting. Second, the sails add nice color in the midst of the water. The colors of this painting are cool and have a calming effect as well.

The pelican, flying north rather close in, gives a distinct sign of animated life to the viewer.

The sand of the dunes are untouched, giving one a feeling of pristine solitude.

The gentle breeze, causing a few minor waves and wafting the palm fronds, lends itself to a very relaxed mood.

The pathway and the hovering gull overhead seem to beckon us to explore the beach with the seaweed and other mysteries having been washed up on shore.

Notice the foliage on the dunes - clinging and holding on, trying to take root where it can to survive the constant daily battles of storm, rain, and wind very much like we do !
