"OLD GARDEN GATEWAY" was painted in October, 2010 by my favorite artist - my husband, Riley Geddings, a noted Florida Landscape Artist. The title for this latest acrylic painting was chosen because of it's anchor tenant, so to speak ... that beautiful old, olde gateway in that beautiful old, olde brick wall. One is given the impression that we are entering into a very secluded, hidden, private area of our home estate ... that secret place where we can spend some time musing on our life - remembrances of the past - challenges in the present - and hopes for the future.
As I said, the brick wall has been perfectly portrayed as old and one can envision those old bricks being laid one by one by the calloused hands of some old bricklayer of yesteryear. Notice that the bricks used in the domed archway - as well as those on the top-cap of the wall - are made of a different-colored clay ... nice job Riley !! Suspended in the archway is an obviously hand-wrought wrought-iron gate complete with a hammered design across the top and decorative hinges connecting to the bricks of the archway. Peeking through the gateway, one espies the main pathway of the garden area - with a background preserve of trees - and just a wee area of blue sky and clouds to complete this scenario.
As we look around our secret garden, our eyes become hypnotized by that absolutely gorgeous "WISTERIA" ... with its large pendulous (hanging freely) springtime blossoms which bloom during mid-May. Wisteria is a genus (class) of the PEA Family (formerly leguminoseae). There are 10-species of Wisteria in the world - 2 in the USA and 8 in Asia (China and Japan). The 2 American species are (1) Wisteria Sinensis the Chinese variety; and, (2) Wisteria Floribunda the Japanese variety. Wisteria is a deciduous (sheds leaves each year) climbing vine - sometimes on a wall - sometimes on a trellis - and is noted for its hardiness, longevity and vigorous grow ... and it loves full sun and moist soil. Flowers come in white, pink, lilac, purple and bluish-purple. By the way - the seeds in the pods are poisonous ...
So much for Wisteria trivia ... back to Riley's painting ...
This old, established garden has a welcoming narrow pathway on which we can stroll and admire the assortment of plants and flowers growing in profusion on either side - a mixed variety of flowering bushes is always a soothing environment in which to reminisce about our "Our Pathway Through Life". My husband must have been thinking about his wife when he decided to include that bird-bath on the right. I almost feel that I can reach out my hand and dip my fingers in the water - but no - that would scare off one of my most favorite little birds - the Cardinal - in this case, obviously a male as evidenced by the bright red plumage.
Our regular customers, art collectors, clients, et al (that's Latin - it means "and all" or etc.) will already have acknowledged that this latest "Geddings Original" is a change of pace for Riley - veering from his beloved "Everglades" and his Florida Sunset/Sunrise masterpieces.
