Description of This Original Oil Painting
Greetings once more from The Sunshine State .... and welcome to this description of the latest masterpiece
from one of Florida's most popular artists - Riley Geddings (my hubby). The "anchor tenant" (one might say)
of this oil painting is, in my opinion, Riley's hallmark ..... the inquisitive, ever-present, eye-catching symbol in each of
Riley's paintings .... the Black-headed Gull (the Larus ridibundus).
Just above this beautiful bird we see yet another such gull circling in search of his - or her - early-afternoon snack.
These two birds add life and meaning to this oil painting -
they bring it to life, one might say - an important aspect when viewing anyone's paintings. Nice job, Riley !!
I should probably have started my description by mentioning the reason for the title - "Florida Gulf Dune".
This dune is perfectly portrayed - sloping gently downwards towards the beach - swept clean by the constant Gulf breezes and
untouched by human hand - notice how white the sand is on such Florida beaches .... hhmmm .... a favorite destination for our
visiting neighbors to the North. On top of the dune we espy a few Sea Oats circling the two Coconut Palms which are bracing themselves
against the incoming breezes - and oftentimes the incoming prevailing winds of some hurricane. In the distance we notice a trio of
Cabbage (Sabal) Palms - Florida's State Tree - and in the surrounding area Riley has portrayed other typical Florida foliage. In the
left foreground we see a cluster of another of Florida's native flora - Sea Grapes.
The back-drop of this realistic painting - looking out west - is two-fold .... the beautiful, clear, aqua-hued waters
of our Gulf of Mexico - artfully
displayed with the small, gentle white-caps effected by the oncoming breezes .... whilst overhead - against the cerulean blue sky - are
some cumulous clouds - with a hint of nimbus on the lower edges - shades of the recent afternoon showers .... all brilliantly
absorbing the light of Florida's sun.

A Little About This Artist
Riley Geddings is a self-taught, noted Florida landscape artist who is keeping the old
'traditional Florida art' alive with his unique painting style, influenced in part by the now-famous
"Florida Highwaymen" of the mid 1950's ! He has been painting professionally for about
25 years !
