"Everglades Study # 7"

Everglades Study # 7

An Original Oil Painting on canvas by Riley Geddings,
Florida Landscape Artist

Artist's Narration of this Oil Painting
"Everglades Study # 7" was completed in February, 2012 and is an ongoing study in art of the pristine Florida Everglades.

This peaceful scene takes you deep into the Everglades where one can see "islands" of Florida foliage including the common cabbage palm tree. One can notice a slight haze on the foliage to show atmosphere in the distance. These islands are typically on a "saw grass plain", or sometimes referred to as "the sea of grass" and these plains are quite large. Then, as the land slopes down to the lowlands, we normally see ponds containing an abundance of wildlife, especially fish-eating birds.

As the artist, I give you the "4 points of interest", on the log, a great white heron is perched and waiting for a nice fish. On the left is another heron gliding in on silent wings to try its luck. In the upper left, higher still, we find my favorite bird hovering above everything - the inquisitive Black-headed Gull (Larus Ridibundus) who is searching for a morsel himself ! Then the 2 tall, stately cabbage palms on the right becomes the forth point.

The wide, flat land in the Everglades makes the sky appear large, high, and beautiful. In that expanse of Cerulean blue, I have created vast clouds, a few of them are absorbing the some of the colors illuminated by the late-afternoon sun. Let us turn our attention to the lowland pond. This small "cypress head" of cypress trees typically grow near, or in fact, in the shallow water itself. These cypress trees are adorned with Spanish moss and we can see a few of their "knees" sticking up. These knees are exposed roots and the Spanish moss is an air plant, not a fungus.

The banks of the pond are usually always thick with water reeds, some even growing in the water near the edge. This is a favorite place for small fish, such as perch and bream to hide. Heron know this and one will see many in the shallows enjoying a few snacks.

The surface of this pond is very calm and mirrors objects well as reflections.

And now for the forefront of this oil painting. The silently gliding great white heron on the left is joining us and will soon land to try a bit of fishing. The great white on the protruding, dead log is in a watch mode and will spring into action soon. That fallen tree log leads to the bank where we can see a number of water reeds, a new cabbage, or Sabal palm illuminated by the glow of the sky trying to survive and catch up with its 2 adult palms. Other typical mixed foliage resides there too and can be seen all over Florida.

I hope that you enjoy this wilderness study as much as I did painting it ! Thank you for looking ! You can purchase this original for a very reasonable price and in addition, you can buy genuine Giclee prints of it - even on canvas. Link on image below.
