Florida Landscape Artist
Description by Maggie Geddings,

About This Original Oil Painting
" BEYOND THE PALMS " - I suggested this title for the most recent oil painting by my husband because when I first looked at it ... it seemed to be placing questions in my mind ... where am I standing ?? ... what is the name of those absolutely beautiful palm trees ?? ... is that pristine aqua water beckoning me ?? ... what is that island in the distance ?? ... is there any wildlife on the island ?? ... what exactly is indeed beyond the palms ??? Come - join with me as I seek the answers to these questions ...
Let us first peruse those four magnificent palm trees in the foregound - one of Riley's greatest fortes is his ability to paint Florida's native trees - especially palm trees - and especially these Coconut Palms. I love the gentle curvature of their trunks - probably having been bent by the constant prevailing breezes and perchance a few hurricane-force winds as the years slip by on this southwest coast of Florida. These four palms are located on a raised dune of those wonderful white sands one finds in the Sunshine State, whereon one notices the shadows cast by the fronds of the Coconut Palms ... It is probably near high noon, as evidenced by the silhouette emanating directly from above.
Let us now take wing and float across the clear, calm, protected warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico displayed in all of its glorious aquas and blues by this popular Florida artist. We have arrived on the beach of that nearby island, beyond the palms ... the typical soft, white, sandy beaches we enjoy on Florida's coasts. In my imagination, this is a medium-sized island - uninhabited by humans - yet the home to a few of Florida's native wildlife - maybe a raccoon family - possibly several species of lizards - and definitely several of our bird species ... Will we espy any cardinals - blue jays - mockingbirds - maybe even a red-shouldered hawk ?? This is all in the imagination of me and you - in the eyes of the beholder.
Cumulous clouds - fluffy and bright - hover overhead in that bright cerulean blue sky. Here we discover Riley's hallmark, the inquisitive Black-headed Gull (the Larus ridibundus), and below him is another such gull gliding along the shallow waters in search of his noonday lunch. Another great oil painting from my favorite artist - Riley Geddings.
